Goring will again be participating in the nationwide Great British Spring Clean and this year, the aim of the national campaign is to encourage people to collect and safely dispose of single-use plastic and recycle as much as possible. In Goring, volunteers have been doing this for many years, collecting plastic bottles and food wrappers and all sorts of other litter from village footpaths, hedgerows, open spaces and areas not covered by regular refuse collection.
Keep Britain Tidy, in conjunction with DEFRA, has also launched the ‘Keep it, Bin it’ campaign this year with the hope of changing the behaviour of those people who still think it is acceptable to leave their rubbish anywhere they please. Litter blights our environment and harms our wildlife. Keep Britain Tidy reported that the RSPCA alone responds to an average of 1500 calls a year concerning animals suffering from the effects of litter and that millions of small mammals a year die as a result of roadside littering.
It would be great if as many villagers as possible could come along to help as then we can cover every part of the village. More volunteers also mean that no one has too great a workload. You can choose what areas you’d like to do, on a first come first served basis, and give as much time as you can spare. It’s surprising how much litter can be picked up in just half an hour. Children, accompanied by an adult, can litter pick in child friendly areas and they do enjoy using the litter grabbers. All litter picking equipment, sacks, gloves and tabards are kindly provided by SODC and Goring Gap in Bloom kindly covers the insurance costs.
Hot and cold drinks and homemade cakes are served free of charge on your return from litter picking and this time we will be using the spacious dining room and kitchen facilities of the Community Centre. The Community Centre also has plenty of parking space.
Please come along if you can spare any time.
